For the Teacher:

Welcome!

This site has been designed as a digital resource to assist in the teaching of an 'Aussie Rock' unit.  It has been created specifically with Year 8 students in mind, however elements of the site could just as easily be adapted for use in younger or older classrooms.

The purpose of the 'theory' component of this website is to provide students with a solid understanding of:

  • The timeline of Aussie Rock music

  • Prominent Australian Rock groups and artists and their songs

  • How to distinguish between different styles of rock

  • Analysing musical characteristics in a rock song

The purpose of the 'prac' component of this website is to assist students in learning the basic approach to the 4 key instruments used in a rock band - guitar, bass, piano & drums.  It has been specifically been designed to help students in performing their own Australian rock song for assessment, however if this assessment does not fit with your unit of work or assessment schedule, the resources can be used simply to teach students how to play the instruments.

This website is not intended to be used as the sole resource for an Aussie Rock unit.  Instead it exists to provide context and specific resources to be used throughout the unit, in conjunction with further material that you deem appropriate for your particular class.  For example, the listening exercises are there only as a guide - you may choose to use the questions provided to probe students' analytical thinking, or you may want to approach the listening task from a different angle all together.  Additionally, you may wish to set a task for the students based on one of the band profiles in the 'Artists' page.

Fundamentally, this site is about allowing students to explore the Aussie Rock genre for themselves, both inside and outside of the classroom.  Assuming your students bring some sort of device (laptop, ipad etc.) to school, this is an easy resource for them to take home and reference for any homework or assessment tasks set within this unit.

Enjoy!
